The Iowa Consortium completed a literature review at the request of the SKIP Work Group for the following prioritized subject areas:
The University of Iowa's Health Sciences Library System includes the use of the Ovid search system which supports scientific review from the following databases:
Interlibrary loan requests were activated for books and journals not currently held in the U of I campus library system, and electronic journals available through University of Iowa subscriptions were scanned for peer reviewed research. Search results identified 1600 potential references related to addictions treatment issues. Medication interventions remain cost prohibitive for Iowa. All clinical trials based on use of medication were eliminated from consideration at this time. Search subject indexes and key terms included: Addiction, Addiction treatment, Alcohol/Alcoholism, Substance-related disorders, Alcohol-related disorders, Substance abuse treatment, Substance Abuse, Brief therapeutic interventions, Solution-focused brief therapy, Client-directed therapy, Psychotherapeutic techniques, Psychotherapy, Clinical trials, Randomized controlled trials, Relapse Prevention, Length of stay, Drug addiction, Drug therapy, Engagement, Recidivism, Psychosocial interventions, Coping skills, Self-efficacy, Treatment modalities, Cultural sensitivity, Gender issues for treatment, Outcome measures, Abstinence, Harm reduction, Retention, Specific drug categories (marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine), 12-Step programs, Cognitive-behavioral therapies, Community Reinforcement and Voucher Approaches, Social Support Systems, Network Therapy, and Restorative Justice.
Over 600 abstracts and/or articles were evaluated in an effort to discern validity of the methodology and study design, the treatment modality (outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential and continuing care), clients that match our ethnicity/client base in Iowa, and outcomes connected to abstinence, improvement in employment, income gains, and lowered arrest records.
